CORNWALL - CHRISTMAS
From Cosy Coastal Christmases to Naughty New Years in
Newquay, the South West is the ever popular location for the winter season.
Crisp winter night walks along the coast and cuddling up by the fire in a
quaint Cornish cottage are only part of the fun. Crack open the Eggnog and
devour a classic Christmas dinner at one of Cornwall ’s idyllic country pubs. The Miners
Arms in Mithian is one of Cornwall ’s
best kept secrets. Ghostly tales and stories of smuggling combined with real
ales and fresh Cornish produce used wherever possible gives the place a certain
old world charm. The 16th century Smugglers Den Inn nestled in the picturesque
hamlet of Trebellan provides fine artisan Christmas dining and local ales with
rolling green views for miles around. Romantic coves and dramatic headlands are
nearby with the pub situated a short walk from Crantock and Holywell Bay .
Three Miles south of
Penzance sits the pretty fishing village
of Mousehole . On the 23rd
of December each year the tiny village celebrates Tom Bawcocks eve with
stargazy pie served at the Ship inn and each year the harbour and surrounding
pubs and shops are illuminated by a spectacular display of lights, well worth a
visit.
Ice skating, lantern
processions and storytelling are just some of the festivities that take place
at the world famous Eden Project, Cornwall ’s
very own indoor rainforest. Whilst the children occupy themselves with a
Christmassy themed crafts workshop, Mum and Dad can enjoy live brass bands and
melodic carol shows with a traditional mulled wine or hot chocolate.
Once Christmas is over, the fun has only just begun with New
Years Eve celebrations in the south well known for their infectious good spirit.
Most villages in the south come alive on the 31st with pubs, bars
and restaurants filled to the brim with merrymakers ready to welcome in the New
Year. However these are no ordinary celebrations. Looe, the usually quiet
fishing town is host to an influx of visitors of all ages, flocking the streets
in head-to-toe fancy dress. Grab a bite at the beautifully located Trawlers on
the quay before starting off your merriment. With plenty of traditional pubs in
the towns centre, begin your night here before making your way down to the
harbour for the twelve o’clock fireworks, Sydney harbour eat your heart out!
For the more energetic visitor the vibrant Nightlife in
Newquay is sure to bring the New Year in with a bang! Just like Looe, hundreds flock
to the strip clad in their best fancy dress and hit the local clubs and bars of
the south west’s number one clubbing town before gathering in the Central
Square for the countdown to midnight. Clubs such as Berties and Sailors are a
popular choice with locals and holidaymakers alike.
To blow away the cobwebs the local way, the Newquay New
Years day dip is said to be the best hangover cure yet! Taking place at the
Harbour at twelve, the hardy daredevils take a plunge in the icy Atlantic sea
to raise money for CLIC Sargent.
Whatever your plans in the breathtaking South West over the
festive season, you’ll be sure to leave with the lingering scent of the sea in
your hair and a spring in your step.
